Granulation tissue

I'm sitting in the NICU entrance lounge. We just talked with Dr. Kerschner and Dr. Leuthner. The upper section of Alexandar's trachea looks to be healing nicely. The bottom section, specifically the area above what's known as a carina, however, has the doctors concerned. There seems to be a lot of granulation tissue growing and almost has the airway to the right lung completely closed off. They plan to give him a steroid which will hopefully deter any additional growth of that granulation tissue. If the steroid doesn't work as it should, there are surgical options to remove the tissue, but Dr. Kerschner told us those options are very risky and it would be best if we can avoid them. He plans to take another look next week and see how that section looks. A tracheostomy still might help the situation, just because could reduce tube movement - with the tube secured at his neck instead of coming in through his nose, head movement wouldn't slide the tube in and out, perhaps irritating the trachea. So we wait another week for more answers. Please continue to pray for Alexandar's health and recovery.

Update 2005-03-08 10:26 AM

Just for the record, they took Alexandar down to the operating room at 10:00 AM and he came back around 11:00 AM.
